Umbra turns the websites you visit daily — especially work web apps like Notion, Linear, Jira, GitHub, Gmail, and Slack — into a comfortable, natural dark mode. It does not simply invert the whole screen (that makes colors muddy and breaks brand colors). Instead it tries three approaches in order and stops as soon as one works well.

Tier A → B → C for the best result on each site. Per-site or global toggle, brightness/contrast/saturation, system light/dark follow, and themes saved on your device. Free — no Umbra account.

Three-tier dark mode

Tier A — Site-native dark

If the site already has a dark theme, Umbra enables that first. Site-authored designs are usually the most natural.

Tier B — Design-color matching

When no ready-made dark theme exists, Umbra remaps the site’s design colors to a dark palette — keeping the feel while darkening backgrounds.

Tier C — Readable dark

If needed, Umbra carefully retunes page colors. Brand colors stay recognizable; text stays comfortable for long reading.

Press Alt+Shift+Q to toggle quickly — disable on awkward sites per site

Limits

In-app canvas surfaces (Figma canvas, Google Docs canvas mode, etc.)
Inside closed shadow DOM
Inside PDF viewers
Tier C results vary by site — turn Umbra off for that site if it looks off
OK to install alongside Dark Reader, but do not enable both on the same site (colors change twice)
